The way I see it, it has nothing to do with vanity or narcissism. Don’t mean in the universal sense but for me, personally. Because of course people who need to document themselves every moment and ask others to take their picture and whatnots exists. I just don’t think I’m one of them, despite the occasional abundance of self-portraits.
Watching A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints right now. What an angry movie! If this is what growing up in Queens was like, dear heaven, I’m glad I didn’t live there. Although, I think it does paint an interesting picture of American machismo, the constant need for the masculine side of all of us to define our territory and defend it relentlessly. As if the protection of what is “ours” was somehow the utmost goal of humanity.
I don’t know. I’ve never really been all that protective, possessive yes, but not aggressively protective. Actually, that kind of attitude makes me REALLY uncomfortable, and I tend to attempt to diffuse situations that devolve into displays of unnecessary masculinity.
